On 26 November 2018, ICELDS Board Chair Dr. Hanna Vasilevich took part in an expert international workshop “The Crimean Tatars: Past and Future of Indigenous People”, organized by the Department of Russian and East European Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Charles University. The event took place in the House of National Minorities in Prague.
Hanna Vasilevich’s presentation was entitled “Crimean Tatars as Indigenous People: Political Participation and Conflict Resolution“. The presentation of Dr. Vasilevich tackled upon the notion of “indigenous people” as it’s understood in the major international legal instruments and its application to the Ukraine’s situation, as well as the political participation of the Crimean Tatars and resolution of the conflicts pertinent to this community. Within this context, the challenges of Crimean Tatars before and after the 2014 annexation of Crimea and responses of the Ukrainian state to the needs of this community were analyzed.
